The newest project on the agenda this month is for NMP. There were a couple of options to choose one but I’m rolling with the “Build a reference site based on a current affairs topic”… ah, reference site! that old chestnut!
I’ve taken a few, um, liberties with my topic… not so much current… or an affair… topic might be a stretch as well…
The theme is THIS WAS THE FUTURE ” Investigating the possibility of possible worlds, assessing the progression of progress”(oooeeeooo). A compilation of speculative works about the supposed future as well as commentary on their likelihood/success/unsuccess.
So for example:
1984
A dystopic future where an oppressive authoritarian regime exercises a monopoly of control via its panopticonic surveillance system and ruthless propaganda. A fictitious account of a possible world? maybe, but then again…In the aftermath of Sepetember 11, countries are taking more astringent measures in the name of security
“Civil liberties: Outrage at New York police plan to track vehicles”.Unprecedented new laws have been introduced allowing unwarranted entry/arrest in the home
“Now there are 1,000 laws that will let the state into your home”.Thanks to an increase for the demand of greater efficiency in the workplace, employers are officially allowed to monitor e-mails, phoncalls etc
“Is work reading your e-mails?”.And then there’s Google Eye…

That’s the general idea. A touch more on the evaluative side perhaps, a dash of appraisal as it were. I do want to keep it non-exhaustive and categorical (e.g. robots, cyborgs, posthuman etc) so I’ve chosen to use wordpress as my platform. This will allow me to categorise sections via tags as well as keep constant updates. I don’t want it to be an linear display of info, it just needs to be an amalgamation of topics relating to specific aspects of the future… not an all round assessment. I did consider a wiki, but it was too binding, too linear, and too closed. I need a more flexible medium, I want it to be something like this.

Really clean design. Really like this theme. A good layout for mainly body based posts, as well as easy navigation. I thought about snaking the aftermath layout… I really struggled not to.
On another note, this makes my brain explode “cyriak”
